No Funding in Place; NTEU Launches Social Media Campaign

As the weekend approaches, there are just six days remaining for Congress to take action to fund the federal government by Sept. 30 to avoid a government shutdown.

This afternoon, NTEU was briefed by top officials at the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) and the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) regarding ongoing administration planning in the event of a funding lapse.

OMB said that federal agencies have been instructed to post shutdown plans on agency web sites by 2 p.m. today. OMB has given agencies the green light to begin unofficial notifications to individual employees today about their status as ‘excepted’ or ‘non-excepted’ employees in the case of a government shutdown next week. Formal furlough notices will not be issued until Oct 1.

A clean continuing resolution (CR) was introduced in the Senate yesterday that would generally fund agencies at fiscal year 2015 levels, although agency discretionary funds would be cut by 0.21 percent. Funding under this CR would last until Dec. 11.

Congressional actions to avert a shutdown will likely not occur until next week. As of today, the Senate plans to begin holding votes on this new CR late Monday afternoon. With the resignation of House Speaker John Boehner, NTEU is urging Congress to stay focused on averting a shutdown.
